Group wants to reverse grim statistics
Nelson met with several other black men and "started brainstorming" to explain why many young blacks are self-destructive choices. The men decided to meet once a month and go into crime-ridden neighborhoods to talk with residents to break the trend.
On June 18, they met at Cherry Tree Crossing and walked the streets, knocking on doors and passing copies of two newspaper articles and information about their newly formed group - Men of God International Awaking Inc.
"The neighborhood is a tough neighborhood, where Satan is loose," Nelson said."We wanted men who are mature in the word of God, who could handle the questions and was not afraid to be there."

"There are many single mothers in this area, we wanted to give them information and encourage them to work with their children learn to read," Nelson said.
When they arrived there, the men learned that Cherry Tree has a reading program on Saturday mornings to help children read, they passed this information along the mother, too.
"They were very receptive and open to listening to what we had to say," Nelson said.
They shared the news article with other young men they saw. "We wanted them to see the bigger picture," Nelson said. "We hope to prevent them from being the next (statistics)."
The plan does not stop the men in the neighborhoods. They will also visit prisons and to share the same information with the inmates.
"We will tell them we went to their quarters, and show it what to do when they come out," he said. "We will be role models for them that men need to their families."
