Pono Hawaiian Grill opens inside Cypress Lounge

There's a new Hawaiian grill in town: Pono Hawaiian Grille opened June 3 inside Cypress Lounge, 120 Union St., Santa Cruz.

The restaurant offers dine-in, take-out and catering options, as well as a full bar and outdoor patio. Pono Hawaiian Grill is owned by Timmy Hunt, former co-owner of Aloha Island Grill. The menu includes poke, extensive vegetarian options, hamburgers, appetizers, salads, seafood and pork, beef and chicken including the popular Chicken Katsu. Enjoy Aloha Friday, featuring local Hawaiian bands, 5-7 p.m. Fridays.

The Penny owners open second location

The Penny Ice Creamery owners Kendra Baker and Zachary Davis recently opened The Picnic Basket on Beach Street.

The Picnic Basket features ice cream from The Penny as well as an array of sandwiches, salads and soups made with ingredients from local farms and artisan food makers including pulled pork from The Rib King, hot dogs from El Salchichero, bread from Companion Bakers, kraut from Farmhouse Culture, and jam from Plumline. Morning offerings include baked goods, hot pressed breakfast sandwiches, and a full coffee bar with Verve coffee. Also on the horizon for The Picnic Basket is a selection of local beers and wine.

The Picnic Basket offers dine-in or take-out options. Hours are 8 a..m. until late. The Picnic Basket is at 125 Beach St., Suite B, Santa Cruz. Call 427-9946.

Love Apple classes cover cheese, beer, pickling

Love Apple Farms has several classes on tap in July:

Home Cheese-Making, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. This workshop will teach students how to make homemade cheeses focusing on chevre, feta and mozzarella. The cost is $95.

Home Preserving: Pickling, noon to 4 p.m. July 9. Learn the cultural history of pickling as well as preservation basics, equipment, food safety issues and variations on basic recipes. Methods to be covered in the hands-on class include basic vinegar pickles, tsukemono Japanese pickled vegetables and sauerkraut. The cost is $95.

Beer Making Basics, noon to 4 p.m. July 10. Dave Bossie, a veteran home brewer from Ben Lomond, is an award-winning beer maker. Brew a batch of beer in class, then learn the history of beer, beer styles, ingredients, and equipment and techniques, then touch upon more advanced techniques like mashing and dry hopping. The workshop includes a tasting. The class is $95.
