Humane Society takes in 42 rescued dogs

For emergency needs, the Humane Society of Charlotte is accepting monetary donations and supplies to assist with fostering the rescued dogs. Needed items include puppy pads, canned dog food, Esbilac (puppy milk replacer), food for nursing mother dogs and gallon-sized freezer bags for food storage. These items can be dropped off at the shelter at 2700 Toomey Avenue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. any day.

More than 40 of the dogs rescued from a Caldwell County puppy mill arrived Saturday in Charlotte - one step closer to finding homes.

The Humane Society of Charlotte took in 42 dogs, about half of them puppies. They'll be sent to foster homes until they're ready for adoption, which could be as early as about two weeks for the healthier dogs.

Usually, dogs taken from puppy mills are timid and afraid of contact, said Karen Terpstra, vice president of operations at the Humane Society of Charlotte. She said she was surprised by the friendliness of the previously neglected dogs.

"They're actually seeking out attention," she said.

Before she was sent to a foster home Saturday afternoon, a Pomeranian sat in her kennel at the Charlotte shelter. She pushed her body against the door, eager for rubs. She stuck her paw out, swatting at volunteers to get their attention.

And a constant thumping sound came from the wagging tail of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel happily pounding against the side of his kennel as volunteers stopped to pet him.

On Thursday, animal control officers raided Mason Creek Kennels in Hudson, seizing 276 dogs from dirty kennels and cramped cages where they sat in their own feces.

The owner of the alleged puppy mill, 53-year-old William "Bill" Thomas Allen, is expected to face criminal charges of animal neglect and cruelty early this week, officials said.

Rescuers said the dogs found at the kennel had medical problems including rotten teeth, severe ear infections and uterine infections from being overbred.

The dogs were distributed to several rescue organizations in North Carolina and Virginia.

Of the dogs given to the Humane Society of Charlotte, many had ear mites, but were mostly healthy, said Humane Society veterinarian Judi Vogt, who helped examine the hundreds of dogs.

But on Saturday, as workers shaved off the matted fur of a shih tzu, Vogt realized the dog's eye had ruptured and might have to be removed.

She said the matted fur had probably irritated the eye and created an ulcer that went untreated. Then it ruptured.
