Kern High School District police chief laid to rest

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Authorities are looking for a vehicle similar to a tan Chevy Cavalier in connection with the hit-and-run incident that killed Steven Alvidrez, according to the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle will have front-end damage.

Alvidrez and his wife were riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Highway 99 south of Delano when they were struck by a car just before midnight on June 17, the CHP reported. The motorcycle rolled over, throwing the couple.

Alvidrez died at the scene and his wife suffered moderate injuries.

Anyone with information about the suspect vehicle is asked to call the CHP at 864-4444.

Kern High School District Police Chief Steven Alvidrez kept up a busy schedule, juggling his law enforcement responsibilities with teaching at Kaplan College, attending church, camping and biking with friends and spending quality time with his wife, children and other family.

One of the qualities that made Alvidrez, 51, exceptional was his ability to balance these aspects of his life without becoming overwhelmed by or neglecting any of his duties, Msgr. Craig Harrison said.

"He was such a good man," Harrison said. "He balanced a life of faith, family and the profession that he loved."

More than 1,600 people turned out at St. Francis Church Wednesday morning to celebrate the life of Alvidrez, killed in a hit-and-run crash June 17. He was remembered as a jovial man, big not only in stature but in heart. Speakers and audience members shared a lot of laughs as people told stories about the good times they had with him.

Harrison said he and Alvidrez played football together at Bakersfield High. Years later, talking outside St. Francis after Mass, Harrison once told Alvidrez he remembered him from high school and couldn't believe he was now a police officer.

"I remember the way you were in high school," Alvidrez responded, "and I can't believe you're my pastor."

Harrison said the loss of his friend has filled him with great sadness. He said Alvidrez's children, Steve and Kristin, were the chief's greatest gifts, and he maintained a wonderful relationship both with them and Ramona Alvidrez, his wife of 29 years.

Law enforcement personnel and firefighters have some of the worst numbers when it comes to divorce, Harrison said. Alvidrez and his wife, however, worked together at their relationship and kept it strong throughout the years. They understood the meaning of commitment.
