San Diego's Horner: Tour de France his tour de force?
It was called a “Walkman,” and it was quite popular back in the day. With this amazing little device, you could actually take your favorite tunes anywhere in the world and listen to them through the magic of headphones.

“Younger riders” pretty much surround — or chase — the 39-year-old Horner in some of the world’s greatest cycling races these days. The fact that he’s past the sport’s usual retirement age — plus the misery of his first try at European road racing, plus the collar, leg and wrist bones he’s broken in crashes — make the following reality all the more striking:
The 98th Tour de France begins Saturday, and before the grueling, legendary race is over, Chris Horner very well could be slipping a yellow jersey over his head.
“I do envision wearing it sometime during the Tour, but with Alberto (Contador), it’d be hard to envision anybody else wearing it at the (overall) finish,” said Horner, who was a stunning 10th behind the three-time champion from Spain in last year’s Tour. “I like to keep things by the facts, and fact is, nobody’s been able to outride Alberto the last three or four years.
“I am one of the leaders of Team RadioShack, for sure, and we’re ranked third in the world right now. That alone means you go top five. Anything less than top five is unsuccessful. You have to go win a stage, win a jersey, win a mountain jersey, something like that, something exceptional. Otherwise, you’re not justifying a leadership role in one of the world’s biggest cycling teams.”
Though he’s been among this nation’s most accomplished domestic riders over the past decade, Horner had his individual stature raised on the national and international scales with victories in the Tour de Basque Country and last month’s Amgen Tour of California, which he dominated with runner-up Levi Leipheimer of Radio Shack.
