You'll find more than the standard fare at Shortstops Card Shop in Palm Harbor. In addition to having a large assortment of current and vintage sports cards, the store also hosts overnight sports fantasy card games offering sports cards as prizes.

Owner Brian Hirsh , a resident of Palm Harbor for 34 years, has been a sports card aficionado for over 28 years. As a high school and college student, Hirsh began buying and selling cards as a hobby. He first visited Shortstops 22 years ago as a customer. About eight years ago he decided to purchase the business. It is obvious that for Hirsh, this is a labor of love.

“We have something for everybody” says Hirsh. “We have autographed cards, baseballs and bats from all the local professional teams, and hundreds of thousands of sports cards for customers to choose from. If I don’t have it, I can get it!”

When it comes to the value of sports cards, it can sometimes be confusing. “Cards are like stock.” said Hirsh, “You invest in the player. If the player does well, his value to the team goes up, and so does his card. If that player does poorly or there is any negative connotation associated with the player, the value of the card goes down."

As an example, the Mark Maguire rookie baseball card that sold for over $600 when he broke Babe Ruth’s home run record, today is only worth $10 because of the steroid scandal.

Some of the most unusual cards for sale at Shortstops are limited edition baseball cards which have a piece of the players actual jersey embedded in the card. These cards are highly collectible and can cost hundreds of dollars.

Shortstops doesn’t sell just sports cards. If you drive by the shop around two or three in the morning don’t be surprised to see the lights on.

From 7pm to 3am on Monday and Fridays, Shortstops sponsors Magic to Gathering nights. Magic to Gathering is a card game of fantasy and strategy. Locals gather to compete with each other to win coveted cards. Salesman Michael Gavitt says, “On Friday nights, you can’t get in here!”
