"Cosplay" is short for costume play, and involves participants donning the outfit of a character or idea and partaking in what is ultimately a form of performance art.
Those who engage with this culture are "cosplayers" and draw mostly on characters from the fictional worlds created in popular manga and anime series produced in Japan.
They gather at public events such as comic book and video game trade shows, at the occasional dedicated cosplay party and in Japan, teenagers even gather on the streets in certain districts with like-minded friends to engage in cosplay.
Believe it or not, this subcultural trend has reached Mildura; and after 14 years working in quality control for export table grapes, Anne Savva has tapped into this craze to start up Mildura's first manga store - now a hub of activity for cosplay enthusiasts.
We caught up with Anne and some of the "cosplayers" who were gathered at her Mildura store over the weekend, to find out more about what draws people to this practice.
