Vt. teachers learn to turn trash into lesson plans
A mad dash for trash has Vermont teachers making some pretty strange items out of recycled goods.
"As people use their bathroom and we are all offended by the odor, this item would be plugged in and just take that odor out of the air and everyone would be happy again," said Sal Wiggin of Northwest Tech Center in St. Albans.
It's just one of a handful of inventions crafted Wednesday at Champlain College. The exercise is part of a week of workshops sponsored by the Vermont Small Business Development Center. They're aimed at helping teachers incorporate business skills into their lesson plans.
"I came to this workshop to specifically try and build skills of my own, so I can help my students develop small businesses that they can have," Wiggin said.
Wednesday's activities also featured a number of students honored for their entrepreneurial skills sharing their tips with these teachers.
"My advice is perseverance. It is a tedious process. You've just got to stick to it and you'll get good results," said Nick Sweet of Rutland High School.
Sweet won this year's Vermont Real Student Business Plan Competition for inventing a special hunting vest for dogs.
He's glad to see the way teachers engage students is evolving beyond tests and textbooks.
"I think being creative and keeping students on their toes is a great way to educate them, make them think on the spot and it really helps with real world situations," Sweet said.
Wiggin already has plans to take what she's learned back to her classroom. She says the activities will teach critical thinking, personal finance, and problem solving skills to her students.
"I think the key for students is that it's interesting, it's exciting, it's hands on, it's something that's fun, and it's learning," Wiggin said.
Learning in a new way that could come to a classroom in your town this September.
About a dozen teachers are participating in this week's workshops. They'll each complete close to 40 hours in business-oriented training activities.
