Resumania: Use clear language in resume, cover letter

You never want prospective employers to ask themselves, "What does this mean?" when reviewing your resume or cover letter. If a hiring manager can't immediately get the point you're trying to make, he or she will move on to the next application. Don't sacrifice clarity trying to show off your creative writing skills or expansive vocabulary.

For instance, this job seeker wandered off track with a wordy, existential tangent:

COVER LETTER: "I have investigated a series of ongoing questions that have always perplexed me concerning the reasons and processes in which we create meaning or that meaning is created through us in life."

Speaking of being perplexed ...

He goes on to write:

"The extremely intricate structures that lend themselves to cultural production are in their nature forever changing, morphing, pushing and pulling themselves in a field of energy."

OK, but when are you going to tell us about your work experience?

These resumes also were lost in translation:

"OBJECTIVE: Magical and talented business professional seeking wizardry of kingdoms with jousting opportunities becoming a part of a mystical group of employees working jointly on an enchanting future of strategic planning."

You can't be serious.

"SKILLS: Toss me a monkey wrench, and I'll consider it a challenge. If all else fails, I'll do my best to turn it into a functional eating utensil. Or, at the very least, an interesting candlestick with the monkey on top."

That's one skill you don't see every day.

Finally, these last two job candidates simply don't seem to understand the concept of the resume and cover letter:

"OBJECTIVE: I'm looking for work to make money quick. Or to get a loan of $4,000."

We were hoping for an employment application, not a loan application.

COVER LETTER: "I forgot to mention that I have some speakers and amps that I'm selling. Let me know if you're interested."

A resume is identified as a document used by individuals to present their background and skill sets. Typically, a resume contains a summary of relevant work experience and education, formatted professionally and presented directly. If the prospect reading your resume doesn’t appreciate your creative flair, chances are it’s best you shouldn’t be working for them in the first place. Here are a few tips to help get you started:
