Last week, I discussed how students in my nutrition class at Hanover College were given an assignment to interview someone over the age of 40 who they believed may be at high risk for heart disease. Responses from the interview were to be used to craft letters back to the clients to educate them and steer them onto a healthier path, if possible. An example may help to explain this concept. A resting blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg or lower is healthy, and everyone should use this as a target. A doctor who practices preventive medicine will want patients to pursue this healthy level and will help to guide their efforts. Patients are informed that every point above this level adds more stress and wear and tear to the delicate inner lining of their arteries. I like to use the red, yellow, green light analogy. When blood pressure hits 140/90 or higher, that is a red light; a blood pressure of 120/80 or lower is a green light; and all in between is yellow. The yellow zone should receive much more attention, and patients with yellow values should be instructed in lifestyle changes in order to keep their blood pressure from rising to the red level, or better yet, lowering it back to the green zone.Medication Used For Students - News
