Sobering facts in wake of Ryan Dunn's death

When you mix up a little summer cocktail, you can add whatever you want.

I like Patron, orange peach mango juice and a splash of lime over clusters of ice. Relatively light and fun, huh?

I think so. But add your car keys to the mix, and it becomes a recipe for disaster.

Last week, "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn, 34, known for his red beard and shocking stunts and pranks, died in a fiery crash on a Pennsylvania highway. So did his friend Zachary Hartwell, 30.

The deaths were tragic and entirely preventable.

Not only was he pushing his Porsche up to 140 miles, the toxicology report showed that Dunn's blood alcohol concentration was 0.196 percent. That more than doubles the legal state limit of 0.08.

I wish accidents like these were rare. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells a harrowing truth.

In 2009, there were 10,839 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. That's 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year.

Drinking and driving is strikingly common. People think, "I've only had three drinks. I'm fine."

But three cocktails during happy hour for a woman my size, say 115 pounds, could put you right on the line of impairment.

It's easy to overestimate your sobriety when you're having fun, updating your status, taking pictures and feeling great. You don't feel drunk. Maybe you don't even look drunk.

But is it worth the risk?

The bartender where Dunn was a regular and had been drinking that night told CNN the star seemed fine when he left. Dunn tweeted a photo from the bar of him and his friend drinking a few hours before the deadly crash.

Dunn was audacious, for sure. It's the "Jackass" way. His career was built on taking chances: riding BMX bikes into muddy creeks, riding an office chair on a skate ramp, ice barrel jumping and the like.

But surely not even a daredevil like Dunn meant to jump a guardrail and fly into a wooded ravine. The police report said officers found the car "fully engulfed in flames."

Unfortunately, this stunt cost people their lives. Hopefully others will learn from this tragedy.

Call a cab, phone a friend or have a designated driver tag along. Whatever you do, don't drive drunk.

There's no entertainment value in taking a chance behind the wheel. It's not TV. There is no laughing audience, no rewinding that scene again.

But there could be closing credits - on your life or someone else's.

Jenee Osterheldt: josterheldt@kcstar.
