Annual snow-clearing budget boost approved
Beginning of Story ContentThe pilot project this winter to boost Calgary's snow-clearing budget paid off big, city councillors concluded, agreeing unanimously on Wednesday to repeat the success with more cash.
The approval of an ongoing $13-million annual boost to the snow budget is expected to reduce accidents on frozen roads. The volume of complaints about poor road conditions dropped off sharply after the additional funds were freed up this past winter.
The extra dollars in the new $37-million budget allowed crews to clear roads more frequently and also dump more sand and gravel on the streets for safer driving.
Alderman André Chabot said the experience was a good test and that Calgarians were also happy with the results.
Parking ban mulled"We may not have had quite as much snowfall, at least not in small increments, as we did in the previous year," he said. "But overall, I think we had as much snow — if not more than we did in the previous year — and it was steady. It was continuous, very long and extended winter season, and most people were very satisfied with the level of snow and ice control that we provided."
Dean Bell, the city's manager of roads maintenance, said that talks are also underway to see whether an overnight parking ban on some priority streets would improve snow-plowing operations.
"It's very hard to do a lot of these priority 2 bus routes," he said. "You look at the Bowness Road type situation, where there's cars parked all over the road. It slows us down. It slows the operators down, and it doesn't do as good of a job."
Bell said were being plowed in as a result, but that a 48-hour ban could solve or at least significantly reduce the problem.
The rules for parking bans and where they would apply will be developed over the summer, Bell said.
