May I Have This Dance?
Summer’s here, so to go along with my seasonally-brighter hair color, I think it’s time for me, in general, to lighten up!
And I have the perfect way to do it, but only if you’ll join me.
May I have this dance?
I think I’m going to make a promise to myself to break out in dance at least one time a day. This, from someone who doesn’t like to break a sweat and hasn’t exercised regularly in ten years (I know, my doctor has already yelled at me. I’m working on it…)
There have been several things recently that have inspired me to add a little more rhythm to my life, not the least of which was my five year old daughter.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about the experience of watching my little girl perform during her end-of-year ballet recital. She had such a blast during her brief time on stage that it was actually sort of infectious. And you know how easily we moms can catch a bug from our kids.
A few days ago, she was having the time of her life showing me the cute little dance she’s learning at camp. We laughed as we took a video of her practicing and showing her stuff. That’s when she issued a challenge:
“Your turn, mama.”
There’s no better sound than the laughter of your kids as they laugh with you as much as at you. So I hammed it up and she and her brother recorded my exaggerated version of what she had just danced for me, just to get their laughter to continue longer.
Since then, I’ve started taking more and more opportunities to get them to laugh with me as I dance. Turning up the music in the kitchen, as I pack their lunches, I dance a crazy house-music improv. Cranking up the iPod after dinner, I take full-advantage of our sparsely-furnished living room and turn it into one of the best dance-floors outside of New York’s meatpacking district.
There’s too much on the radio these days to keep anyone in their seats. Thanks to the American Idol -spurred resurgence of J-Lo, we’re constantly hearing her dance floor anthem “On the Floor” as the de facto song of early summer, but I actually don’t mind it. I’ll harken back to another show with the word ‘American’ in the title by giving it an American Bandstand- type endorsement: “It’s got a beat you can dance to!

Some of the highlights in my hair are from bleach. the majority of it is not.
