Manufacturing companies in North America have enjoyed a nearly two-year period of growth, lead the way in job restoration and creation while amassing record profits. Is manufacturing making a come back or just reinflating inventories from the great recession?

The latest Institute of Supply Managements manufacturing PMI for April is 60.4, slightly lower from 61.2 in March. Readings above 50 indicate growth. The PMI has now been above 50 for 23 months . New orders came in at 61.7 lower than the 63.3 the previous month and a fourteenth month above 50 . The employment index is 62.7, slightly below last month’s 63.0 but a seventeenth month above 50.0 . Price Index hit 85.5 in April the highest reading since July 2008 when the index registered 88.5 percent.

The numbers look great, except for rising costs. It appears that companies invested in productivity improvements before they started rehiring or hiring, as indicated by the six month lag in a better than 50 employment versus the overall PMI. A weak dollar has made our exports more affordable compared to pre-recession times and European competitors. Exports that often are going to build and feed growth in emerging markets.

For over ten years North American manufactures have feared or moved operations into China. China became the bane that caused the first recession of the last decade forcing the migration of electronic and electronic component manufacturing to South East Asia, but change is always a certainty.
