Patch Picks For The Renton Farmers Market: June 28

We never thought it would happen, but the first day of summer finally arrived last week. And, the solstice coinicided with the Tuesday Farmers Market, which made it extra special. New veggies are appearing every day. Peonies and dahlias were prevalent in bouquets this week— and you can't lose with the prices of flowers at several stands: $5 will get you a beatiful arrangement for your office, or for your sweetheart, and it will likely last all week.

Here are Patch's Picks for this week at two Renton Markets (note that not every vendor is at both markets. The Sunday market has a smaller number of vendors. Check the Farmers Market web site  for specific vendor information.)

1. Sweet Teeth Bakery, from right here in Renton has an assortment of custom-made baked goods, including mixed berry pies, biscotti, scones that looked to die-for, and mini loaves of bread (seniors ALWAYS like the mini loaves), which include zucchini bread. They are a full-service bakery, that also makes custom wedding and birthday cakes when not at the market. Check the Sweet Teeth web site  for more information.

2. The Tuesday market has a weekly chef demonstration. On board for this week, is Chef Eli from Vino at The Landing . Vino specializes in hors d'eourves, and the Chef is skilled at using fresh ingredients from the market to demonstrate the dish he presents. You don't want to miss his presentation at 4:30 p.m.

3. In the mood for a quick meal? Look no further than a new market vendor — La Pasta. They have weekly pasta specials, tons of choices, such as 4-cheese ravioli, or spinach garlic ravioli with pomodoro sauce, spaghetti, and puttanesca sauce. Add some mixed greens, radishes, and toss with your favorite dressing or lemon juice, add a loaf of bread from Grand Central Bakery, and you are good to go (Try the rye; it's divine).

4. Family Pepper and Produce has a beautiful array of produce, including onions, potatoes and sugar snap peas.  Have you roasted garlic before? It's not difficult. Cut the tops off the head of garlic, drizzle in olive oil and place in a COLD 400 degree oven for about an hour. It is soft, and melts in your mouth. It is excellent on potatoes, or any of the crusty bread that you pick up at the market.

5. Each week at the market the "Kid's Patch" table is teeming with children eager to have a good time. Long-time volunteer, Pat Roland, hand-makes Playdoh each week, and the other volunteers roll the dough into kid-size balls that the children can roll out and decorate with supplies on hand. Mainstay volunteers are Merna Wheeler and Deloris Dewing. Close to a hundred kids come through the kid's booth each week, and these ladies are saints. Note to parents: The ladies aren't babysitters. Parents are expected to stay with their kids.

As most people know, the vast majority of businesses are closed during the holidays. So what do you do once you’ve opened all of your gifts and you’ve eaten your family lunch or dinner?
