Health hazards of smoking hookah

Four college students sit around an elaborate pipe at the Cobra Lounge located at 1323 Cornwall Ave. They take puff after puff of cooled smoke.  The smoke forms a halo around the group, highlighting splashes of color on the wall and signed playing cards stuck to the ceiling.

Although hookah is a social trend, there are health risks that some hookah smokers may not know about, according to a May 2011 New York Times article.

In a Smoking and Tobacco fact sheet, The Centers for Disease Control said, a typical one hour-long hookah smoking session involves inhaling 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette. Hookah users are also at risk for the same cancers and health issues as cigarette smokers.

Niko Ritter, manager of The Cobra Lounge said a hookah is a large water pipe filled with ice.  Shisha, the molasses infused tobacco, is heated with charcoal embers and the smoke is filtered through the ice water.  The water cools the smoke and filters out some of the harsh chemicals found in shisha, Ritter said.

Ritter said hookah is a healthier alternative than smoking cigarettes.

“When smoking anything, there is a compromise,” Ritter said. “This is the healthiest alternative to smoking cigarettes and it is being dispersed among a group of people.  You aren’t smoking the whole thing by yourself.”

Dr. Emily Gibson, medical director of Western’s Student Health Center, said there is no safe alternative to smoking and many hookah smokers do not think about the potential risks.

“Like marijuana, hookah smokers engage in magical thinking about the safety of hookah smoke and don't have much interest in hearing about the risks,” Gibson said in an email. “It is a lifestyle choice they feel they have the right to make. Most new trends are marketed to adolescents and young adults as they are more apt to be susceptible to fads, experimentation and not considering health risks of their decision making.”

Western junior Ryan Roberts said The Cobra Lounge’s atmosphere increased his interest in smoking. Roberts did notice a change in his health after smoking hookah.

“I definitely notice a reduction in lung capacity after I smoke,” Roberts said.  “I find it hard to believe that someone would do this every day.”

Whatcom Community College student Chris Ryan, 18, said he believes hookah smoking may be safer than cigarettes.

“At least it doesn’t have all the chemicals they add to cigarettes,” Ryan said.
