So you can imagine the conundrum when I'm shopping for a new car: how do I marry the needs of a - ehem - responsible small-family man, with those of a speed demon? A family car is about safety and space, while a sports car is usually everything the opposite. Sure, there are plenty of good, high-powered solid family vehicles out there that can give that thrill, but how do I do it without busting the bank? I need a vehicle that would satisfy the needs above, yet be affordable enough to purchase, maintain and run, satisfying Mummy's requirements.

Enter the Peugeot 308 Turbo. Yes, it's not new on the market, we've seen them on the roads and in review pages for years. But the French auto­maker's decision to put some enhancements to the model - replacing the four-speed gearbox with an adaptive six-speed tiptronic system and squeezing a tad more horsepower from the al­ready impressive 1.6 litre twin scroll turbo engine, makes this car worthy of another mention.

First of all, this Pug hot hatch is gorgeous from almost any angle. The distinctive 'smile', fierce-looking headlights, aggressive stance and the new rear diffuser just scream 'sporty', 'fun', or more accurately, 'get out of my way'. With 156hp and 240Nm of torque, the refined PSA-BMW Prince engine (shared with the more upmarket Mini Cooper S) would somewhat deliver the promise.

Open the doors however, and another word comes to mind - 'spacious'.
