Free ham and beans Saturday in Norris City

On Saturday, June 18, the Norris City Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with local merchants and the Norris City Senior Citizens will be serving free ham and beans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As best as all involved can figure, this is the 50th year for the annual event.

Several local residents have been asked about the beginning of and history of ham and bean day. Ezra Millspaugh, who has been involved with the event for 47 years, told of its early days when the meal was served in a large tent with 500 to 800 people attending.

"Everyone came to town to shop, visit with their neighbors and eat ham and beans with all the fixings," he said. "Mabel Beard was the cook back then at the old grade school."

From being held in the tents, the event moved inside to the Lions Club and is now held at the Senior Citizens building, with Tammy Musgraves and Carolyn Williams cooking the beans at NCO. The Norris City Senior Citizens bake pies and sell them for $1 per slice. There has been a "bean guessing" contest for several years, with Marge Millspaugh always being the lucky one who gets to count all the beans. There will a 50-50 drawing, with tickets $1 each or six for $5.

Dues paid by the Norris City Chamber of Commerce members fund the cost for the ham and bean meal.

The 2011 Chamber of Commerce members are Doug's Food Mart, Norris City Fire Protection District, Norris City Memorial Public Library District, Banterra Bank, Campbell Funeral Home, Norris City Senior Citizens, Crouch Accounting, B and B Tank Truck and Construction, McLean Implement, New Wave Communications, Sharon's Beauty Shop, Mary Gaines, Treva Garlick, Van Winkle and Van Winkle Attorneys, Village of Norris City, Hood Center (WOVSED), Wonder Market, Rusty Bucket Laundromat, Johnson Truck Sales, HWRT Terminal, Texas Eastern Products Pipeline, American Legion Post 109, Bucyrus, Learn Grow and Discover, NCOE School District 3, Puppy Luv Dog Grooming, The Norris City Banner, and Ezra Millspaugh and Jeannie Gossett, co-chairmen for the event.

Rutherford's the Captain of the Shiplaw!

Leading into Round 2 of the 2011 Scottish Motocross Championships, the mood amongst the busy Shiplaw paddock was very positive and all in attendance were looking forward to another action-packed weekend after a successful Round 1 ran with the new format five weeks ago.

The Shiplaw circuit was looking excellently prepared by the Scottish Youth Club on Saturday morning and after a week of beautiful sunny weather it may have been slightly dry to start with when Timed Qualification got underway however with clouds in the sky we were soon reaching for our umbrellas as the natural track watering system switched on from above.

With the Adult MX2 class lining up to race on Saturday only, it was once again between LPE Kawasaki’s Bryan Mackenzie and the Motone KTM line-up fighting for the top spot. Quickest Qualifying time went to Motone’s Estonian rider Rannar Uusna, however when the gates dropped for the first race it was the number 121 Green Machine that lead the front of the pack. Runner-Up for the day Uusna was never too far behind Mackenzie who once again rode solid to take all 3 Race Wins, and 3rd Overall on the day went to Mark Perfect who saw off challenges from David Houston who put in a strong ride taking 2nd in the final moto for 4th Overall and Sean Macdonald ending up 5th.

The Autmatic 50cc Class at Shiplaw saw a strong performance from James Haddow taking 4 Race Wins out of the 5 to claim Overall Honours ahead of a consistant Adam Scott in 2nd and Josh Hodge taking the final Podium step in 3rd. Lewis Mcleary didnt have as successful a weekend as he enjoyed at Round 1 and ended up 4th Overall however at least he went home happy after taking the win in the final race and collecting his prize of some Rhino-Goo bike cleaner.

Scott Russell has been in fine form recently in the 65cc Class and with the absence of Round 1 winner Alexander Brown on Saturday, Russell easily rode to 3 comfortable Race Wins. Coming back from a week’s holiday abroad though, Brown made an appearance on the Sunday and took off at the front of the pack for his first race as Russell wobbled out of the gate and rounded the first corner in last place. A devistatingly quick first lap saw Russell already recovering back up to 2nd place early on and with Brown still out front it seemed the crowd were all in anticipation wondering if it would be possible to see a battle for the win between 2 of the countires finest youth riders. Russell then managed to make his way into the lead powering past Brown down the first hill and holding it to the finish to take his 4th Victory of the weekend. Brown won the final 65 race with Russell in second ahead of the close battle for the remaining top six placings between Daniel Chisholm, Lewis Dow, Troy Anderson, Jordan Gill and Ryan Thomson.
