SPCA 'removes 60 dogs'

The SPCA has collected nearly 60 dogs from the Sweet Home Farm in Phillipi, where at least three dogs were killed by residents this week. The attacks took place after a three-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of dogs.

Philasanda Mbokothola died on Tuesday when he was attacked by a pack of dogs while playing with his four-year-old sister, Philanathi, in their home.

The dogs dragged the boy from his home after his mother had gone to the toilet. She had left the front door open.

Angry residents then turned on stray dogs, killing one, and yesterday SPCA inspectors found two more dogs that appeared to have been stoned to death. The SPCA said they had also caught one dog that had been pointed out by residents as possibly being involved in the incident.

Yesterday SPCA and the Animal Welfare Society inspectors were in the area collecting not only stray dogs but also ones given away by their owners, who said they did not want the dogs anymore.

The SPCA rounded up 21 dogs yesterday to add to the 35 dogs they collected on Tuesday.

Neels Ferreira, an inspector at the Animal Welfare Society, said they had collected 15 dogs which they were going to keep for about five days.

If no one adopted them, the dogs would be put down, he said.

Ferreira said 11 of the dogs had been given away by their owners.

SPCA spokeswoman, Lamees Martin said they were going through the informal settlement collecting dogs.

She described some of the stray dogs as wild and said they were hard to catch.

Martin said they were going to continue collecting the animals for the rest of the week.

SPCA inspectors also took away five small puppies, which could fit into an inspector’s hand.

Sweet Home resident Lizo Mpontsana handed over five stray dogs to the Animal Welfare Society inspectors.

Mpontsana, 24, said there was a five-year-old child living in his home and he would hate to see a repeat of Tuesday’s incident.

”If they (the dogs) do not have any owners, then they must take them away.”

Resident Lovers Singeni, said his neighbour’s child was involved in an incident in February where three-year-old, Alutho Hinana, was blinded after being attacked by dogs while playing outside a crèche with friends.
