Untrained Elegance

From Chicago recluse Henry Darger to Grandma Moses, Norfolk’s Rosemary Gill fits within the folk art tradition. She may not have gone to art school, but her talents are still apparent. Her works are a fascinating array of brilliant primary colors that combine to depict many of the area’s primary attractions—Tobey Pond, Battell Mountain and the Freund Farmers Market in Canaan. Ms. Gill is a fourth-generation Norfolkian; while it may be difficult to prove, her family was, perhaps, the town’s first weekenders (although she now lives there full-time). When her mother was a child, she said getting to Norfolk by car took eight hours from the Gills’ other home in Larchmont, N.Y., in Westchester County. Her father, Brendan Gill, was a well-known writer for The New Yorker. “You keep re-learning what you already know. You think it’s new; you’ve heard it before, but it seems brand new,” she said. “Oil painting class reintroduced me to some basic tenets of painting: horizon lines, painting from back to front, that I’d forgotten a lot of, even though I’d been painting for a long, long time. I also re-learned that paintings are read left to right, the way that books are read.” Ms. Gill heard back from every one of them, or at least their representatives. His Holiness Pope John Paul II gave a response and a blessing through an emissary. Moving on from royalty and theocrats, she also sent eggs to each president starting with Ronald Reagan, along with Oprah Winfrey, and Time Warner CEO Steve Ross, who ordered 500—though with her limited resources, she could only make 12 for him. An egg she made for PBS was given the network’s “Dubious Achievement Award,” which goes to people who have the best ideas that aren’t necessarily successes. While she stopped production of the eggs due to their cost, some of them—as well as a few of the letters she received—were on display in the Norfolk Library show.
