Gym Rat: Socasize class like Caribbean-style mosh pit

Some people train for races. Others train for carnivals.

In Toronto, one of the biggest festivals of the summer doubles as an endurance event. The festival formerly known as Caribana, now simply called Toronto Caribbean Carnival, is basically two weeks of parties culminating in a daylong dance parade, which happened this year on July 30.

The parade is famous in part for its skimpy, colourful outfits, often no more than bedazzled bikinis worn with feathered headdresses. For many, the clothes add an extra incentive to prep for the event.

Socacize, a Caribbean dance workout held in a handful of locations across the GTA, isn’t affiliated with the carnival. But its unofficial purpose is to whip revellers into shape and fine tune their moves before they step into the spotlight.

Though summer is the peak season, classes run year-round, pitched as a fun alternative to the gym or traditional aerobics.

Like most dance-based exercise classes, what you get out of it depends largely on your skills going in.

Good dancers, whether trained or naturally gifted, can pick up the steps quickly and perform them with proper technique. The rest, too slow to watch the sweat or spastic.

I am in the camp spastic.

It seems that I am one of the few taking the class as a drop-in, instead of booking the training camp said. All other participants seem to know each other - and how the class works. Catching up is difficult because we skip any semblance of warm-up, probably because the instructor, Ayanna Lee-Rivears, starts 15 minutes later, after some problems with the audio system.

We dive straight into frantic, puppet-like moves, followed by excavation to inflatable heel and hip axes different, all fasted, music deaf.

For the next half-hour, we string together sets of four to six high-energy moves, some similar to aerobics stalwarts such as step-touches and hamstring curls but with more dramatic arm gestures.

Other steps are far more dancelike, requiring co-ordination and a certain mobility in the hips that’s far beyond my natural range. I rob them of any club-worthy flair.

There’s an underlying bounce to every move, which is great cardio but murder on the calves.

“It’s high impact,” Lee-Rivears says after class. “But you can always modify."Neither she nor her public relations officer has responded to my request for an interview.

Music is the parade safe, so Lee-Rivears uses gestures to communicate. It is not always successful. She says just the shots and I often stop and watch the first few seconds.

Gym Rat: Socasize class like Caribbean-style mosh pit

For about 15 minutes, we do variations on squats — deep, low squats, like trying to sit on the ground. We do them fast, then slow, then in pulses. Then come planks and one-legged squats with a booty shake. It's a twist I've never seen before and it

Jackie Wright: Fire up hip and leg strength

You will want to progress from traditional squats with the TRX, to one-leg squats, and then once you have mastered each of those exercises, you may be ready to progress to the lunge-knee/pull. As always, prior to beginning any exercise program,

When the second class started, we went back to those squats and pliés, only adding the extra difficulty of lifting one leg at a time and doing one-legged squats. Many of the moves in this longer class were the same as we had just done,

Receiver says he's fully recovered from last season's injury

“I did just a lot of leg presses, doing stuff on a bicycle, one-legged squats — just to get my left leg back to the strength it used to be,” he said. “Some of it didn't hurt, but some of the stuff like the leg presses hurt quite a bit,” he said.

Stiegler Savors Return to Summer Training

The One Legged Squat - Unlock The Hidden Power In Your Butt

The one legged squat (also known as the Bulgarian Split Squat) is one of the greatest exercises for the legs and butt, since this movement allows for a completely free motion throughout the lower body and utilizes a lot of muscle fibres.

It has a lot of versions and can be made less difficult or harder using some slight adjustments.

Tap Into Metabolic Pathways With Circuits To Supercharge Lactate Production

Fast paced strength training offers the bodybuilder an array of ways to organise a weight lifting program. You’ll be able to create circuits with increasing levels of intensity. Possibilities vary from fat burning techniques to vertical jump improvement, athletic agility and boxing based movements.

Circuits are extremely flexible exercise programmes because the drills may be selected to boost hypertrophy, stamina, pliability, or cardio-respiratory health.

On a given signal (like an electronic timer or digital pulse monitor), individuals begin to go through the sequence of movements, operating at their own specific pace, by doing repetitions for each and every exercise. Two to six laps are usually undertaken, each circuit being timed with one or more minutes’ rest in between circuits, or longer, depending on the levels. Each circuit based workout may last for 20-35 minutes.

Please remember if you’re carrying out 15-50 reps of a certain exercise, you are not working out at a high enough percentage of your 1 Rep Maximum to improve absolute strength levels. You will, nonetheless, be developing muscular stamina. Implement activities that you would ordinarily do with both arms and legs, with only one. To illustrate, do a one handed seated arnold press, using the left and then right arm, or do reverse lunges working with just one leg. Specific kinds of body building, notably low repetition, heavy weight methods (ME or Maximum Effort day in the Westside Conjugate Periodization), do little for enhancing muscle stamina. However, lighter loading, sub-maximal programs, found in circuit resistance training, have a substantial impact.

Never think that all exercises will give you the muscle hypertrophy you want, even those that focus on thigh muscles and hamstrings.

Squat on one leg or Bulgarian split only one of many movements of the lower body. Some movements stimulate the large muscle groups such as the chin up and the program you use can have a significant influence on how your physiology reacts to your workouts.
