A blue Canucks jersey was flown instead of the regular preparatory flag at the start of the Comox to Campbell River stage of the Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race yesterday (Monday).
The 14-day round-island race began in Nanaimo on Saturday and the 41 yachts, sporting many flags, made a colourful sight as they moored in Comox overnight Sunday after completing the second leg of the race from French Creek.
The crews and their supporters also provided a timely boost to town businesses on Sunday afternoon and evening.
Most of the yachts were expected to take between two and three hours to get to Campbell River, and good winds indicated some fast times could be recorded.
People can follow the progress of all stages of the race live online thanks to an initiative of the principal race sponsors, Telus.
It is using spot transponders linked to satellite technology to track each of the boats in the fleet over the two weeks. Viewers are able to log onto the www.vanisle360.com website at any time and see where each boat is.
"It's very cool technology", said event manager, Janine Bell. "It adds a whole new meaning to the phrase 'armchair sailor'.
"From the comfort of your living room or anywhere you have Internet access you can just click and see exactly where the boats are, regardless of whether they are off French Creek or Cape Scott.
"I think it will be a lot of fun to follow especially down the west coast and the last leg through the Gulf Islands."
The 2011 race marks the eighth running of the Van Isle 360, which began as an annual event in 1999 but switched to once every two years in 2001.
