Austin moms market organic baby food NurturMe

When an Austin mom was expecting her first baby three years ago, she started researching baby food and discovered that little had changed since she was a baby.

“Bad-tasting food in bulky, heavy, wasteful jars was still the norm,” says Caroline Freedman, 32. “I wanted something better for my baby, myself and the environment.”

She teamed up with her friend, Lauren McCullough, 32, who has a culinary background, and after doing their homework, the duo launched NurturMe baby foods in Austin a year ago. The two were recently named among Forbes.com’s top “Mompreneurs.”

NuturMe is made from certified organic, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables and comes in four flavors that can be rehydrated with water, milk, formula or breast milk. The packaging is eco-friendly.

Freedman and McCullough were in Dallas recently and demonstrated how to prepare their baby food, and offered a taste. Have you ever tasted baby food?

I admit that up until now I have only tasted the jarred fruits, unwilling to try spinach or chicken, which just don’t look or smell appetizing.

The NurturMe flavors tasted wonderful: clean, fresh Plump Peas, Scrumptious Squash, Crisp Apples and Hearty Sweet Potatoes. Freedman’s daughter, Audrey, who is the cover baby on the NurturMe packaging, came along for the demo and promptly requested some of the prepared foods to eat.

One of her favorites is Froggy Pasta, made with Annie’s Organic Shells and White Cheddar with Plump Peas added. You can also add the squash to Annie’s regular mac ’n’ cheese to boost the nutrient content and make it look cheesier. That’s just one way to use NurturMe baby food as your child grows. It’s designed for infants and toddlers, depending on how you mix it.

Plump Peas has the most surprising flavor; it tastes like fresh peas. In part that’s because these baby foods aren’t cooked. They’re just dehydrated, which means they maintain their nutritive value, including their beneficial phytonutrients.

When the demo was nearly over, 3-year-old Audrey piped up and said, “I want peas.” That’s an endorsement, loud and clear.

NurturMe baby food is available at Central Market, Whole Foods Market and selected Target and Babies R Us stores. The suggested retail price for a box of eight packets is $9.49. Some stores also sell the packets individually. There are several new flavors in the works, too.

Long before I had my baby, I never really thought I would belong to a mothers group. Be that as it may, now that I have become a mother, chatting to other women about what is taking place in my life has been a huge help. The run off from non-organic cotton farms has damaged habitats and in particular water ways. Organic products are grown without the use of artificial fertilisers and chemicals. Rather, organic farming depends on things like crop rotation, enhancing soils naturally, and using organic pest control practices.

Buying organic produce means you are getting products which have been produced in an eco-friendly manner, or at a minimum in a way which causes less pollution of the environment. No or less use of insecticides and fertilisers means less pollution of our land and rivers, reduced diseases for farm employees, and fewer health risks for children by lessening their contact with dangerous chemicals.

Quite a few producers of baby clothes also make a range of organic clothes or you can find shops completely committed to organic baby fashion. Either way, there are a lot of brands to choose from and all ages are taken care of, from toddlers to adolescents. Of course, organic clothes for men and women is also accessible and I am looking into that for myself and my partner.

I am not saying that I am only ever going to buy organic cotton or bamboo cotton clothing (which is an excellent alternative to regular or organic cotton ) for my baby but I am absolutely going try to whenever it is available.
