MANILA, Philippines – Q: Dear Dawn, Hello. I've been following your column for months now. I find it very informative. That's why I decided to write in I don't know what to do with my six-year-old daughter. She gets into scrapes and sometimes comes home with cuts and bruises. Being a mom I want her skin to be smooth and I don't want her acting like a tomboy.How should I deal with this?

A: When it comes to teaching little girls the virtues of behaving like a  lady, the burden always falls on us mommies. But when we are dealing with kids as young as six-year-olds, we have to give a few allowances.

Your daughter is a normal, active child for her age. However, now is also a good time to start teaching her the importance of proper ladylike behavior. As a matter of fact, with my two-year-old daughter, we have already begun to call her attention to a few, still very innocent mannerisms. For example, sitting down with her legs together. I am a firm believer that if a parent is consistent and persistent about rules and limitations, a child can learn because a child is keen on knowledge.

Have you tried being persistent with your daughter yet? If not, I suggest you start now. Just very gently, remind her about what she knows she ought not to do, and also gently call her attention when she forgets. Be prepared for the latter to happen more often, and exercise patience with handling her.

Secondly, have you been a good example for her? Perhaps, if she sees that Mommy is a bit rough around the edges, your little girl will feel that there is nothing wrong with being the same way as mommy. Children, after all, mirror their parent’s words and actions. In my case, I do my best to act like a lady  every time. I show my daughter that I take pleasure in wearing dresses, fixing my hair, and sitting in a proper way. So when it’s her turn, I can remind her that I behave the same way.

It does help to also introduce your daughter to girly plays. For instance, playing “chef” together, or cradling a baby doll – which needs gentleness and softness in movements. Dressing up her dolly will also teach her about what must remain unseen to the naked eye such as underwear. This way she will realize that it’s ugly for a girl to sit with her legs spread wide especially when she is wearing a dress or shorts.  If your daughter is not into playing with dolls like mine is, find out what she likes better. My daughter enjoys playing with dogs so she has an assortment of plush puppies lying around. When I play with her, I teach her about properly caring for pets, how to be gentle by not grabbing them.

Apollo Sebo De Macho review

When I was a kid, I got plenty of scars on my legs since I always spent time playing outside. I always ended up getting some wounds or getting some insect bites. These stuffs left scars on some parts of my body specifically on my legs. I remember my mom came home one day trying to put something on my legs. She used Sebo De Macho on my skin. When I was a kid, I remember very well the name Sebo De Macho. It was very useful in my household. My mom and aunt used to apply it on their scars but never on the face. As I grow older, I still used Sebo De Macho from time to time. It was really useful on my skin. Just last month, I bought Apollo Sebo De Macho. This is just one of those many brands of Sebo De Macho manufactured here in the Philippines. This comes in a 12 g tiny round casing. It costs around PhP8-12 depending on which outlet you purchased. Its consistency is a bit coarser and sticky. It is a bit greasy as well. It has a faint smell which I think is not that pleasant but it also fades later on when applied on the skin. I usually use this after cleaning myself at night time. I applied it on my scar on my left leg when I had a minor accident last month. I got a small wound which left a small scar. This item does not really take effect right away. I had to apply it religiously at night time to get a good result. After two weeks of application, I could see that my scar was slowly fading. Take note, the older that you have the scar on your body, the longer you can see good results. After one month of application, I consumed around 4 items of this Apollo Sebo De Macho. My scar was all gone. This is just effective for me. I would purchase this product whenever needed. This is quite cheap but very effective for me. I just never attempted to try it on my face.
