Rusted Root releases much anticipated album after 9 year hiatus

For the last 20 years, Pittsburgh-based band Rusted Root have gained a huge following with their mix of all different styles of music.

With "Stereo Rodeo," their first album in seven years, the band continues with their style of mixing different genres, including Latin American, Native American, acoustic rock and Indian with a heavy percussion section.

The album opens with "Dance in the Middle," a rockabilly-influenced, body-shaking song with catchy lyrics like "You hold me back like a lion in the circus." They follow that up with a cover of "Suspicious Minds," adding a heavier drum beat and lead singer Michael Glabicki's smooth voice to the Elvis classic.

"Weary Bones" and "Bad Son," the third and fourth tracks, have a harder edge reminiscent of early ‘90s rock like Bush or The Wallflowers. "Bones" has some of the most beautiful lyrics on the album with "These weary bones, they walk the earth thinking of you" and "No more pity for the love that's fallen."

"No one knows you in this town," Glabicki sings on "Give Grace," the fifth song, which quickly turns into a favorite. Their consistent shift from one style to the next was similar to different musicians from eras past. Band member Liz Berlin has an earthy and haunting voice very reminiscent of Irish singer Lisa Hannigan. Her voice fits wonderfully with Glabicki's.

"Driving One," and "Driving Two," songs six and eight on the album are fast, upbeat bursts that bookmark, "Stereo Rodeo," the title track.

"Animals Love Touch," the ninth song on the album, is back to the rockabilly style. It's fun and just as playfully silly as "Stereo Rodeo."

From listening to Rusted Root's new album, it's clear that they're a band all about surprises. Just when you think you know what you're going to get, they toss in something like a dramatic violin. Almost all of the songs build to a frenzy of sound and heavy beats. Certain songs, particularly "Dance in the Middle," have a flavor of country. I was reminded most of early Dwight Yoakam records. But it's nearly impossible to pick out just one style.

They close the album with "Crucible Glow," which sounds like a song that could be found on the "Justified" soundtrack. It takes the album out on a strong note and helps tie together a great comeback album for a much beloved band.

So after repeat views of Matlida brought Rusted Root back to mind, I put When I Woke in the wife's car for heavy rotation.  We were giving the album the full treatment, windows down, volume up, and singing along.  I realized nearly twenty years later, I still no idea what Michael Glabicki is saying.  This is curious, as I used to spend countless hours listening to music, reading the liner notes, and learning lyrics.  I re-checked the liner notes and found very limited lyrics, and none for 'Send Me On My Way'.  Even more curious is what is available when trying to find the real lyrics. I seriously doubt I'm right either, but at this point we may not know.  I was browsing rustedroot.com/discography , and was reminded of their debut album Cruel Sun .  Growing up in the Pittsburgh area, I was aware of this disc, but never obtained it.  I'm guessing the lack of lyrics on When I Woke may be due to having been published once prior.
