QI: Quite interesting facts about squares

Squaring a number – multiplying it by itself – is so called because in classical geometry you multiplied the shorter side of rectangle by the longer to get the area. In a square these are both equal, so raising a number to the power of two was expressed as “squaring” it. The term has been used in maths and geometry since the mid 16th century.

The word “square” has “four” buried in its past: it’s from the Latin exquadrare (to make square) which derives from quattor meaning “four”.

Being square

“Square”, meaning honest or fair is first recorded in the 1560s. By the early 19th century it had added the sense of directness and efficiency – “square deal”, “square up”, “square away”.

It was only in the Forties that it began to be used to apply to people who were conservative or conventional. One theory is that it started as jazz slang and referred to the hand gestures a conductor’s hand made when directing music with a regular four beats to the bar (unlike the funky syncopated rhythms of jazz).

“Square toes” was an 18th-century term used for old men – people who were so out of touch with fashion they still wore square-toed shoes.

In the 19th century, “square” was also gin, because of the characteristic shape of the bottle.

London squares

About 128,000 years ago, in what is now Trafalgar Square, hippos wandered. You are about as likely to see one today as hear a nightingale singing in Berkeley Square; they don’t like urban areas, preferring thickets and shrub land where they can breed in the dense bushes and feed off insects on the floor. However, nightingales did nest in Regent’s Park until the early 20th century.

Square squares

Most town squares aren’t square; though most don’t pretend to be, as they are plazas, piazzas, ploschads and so on. But Trafalgar Square was laid out as a square (though it’s been altered since); Syntagma Square in Athens is square; so is the Place des Vosges in Paris.

Square miles

The population of the world could fit into 500 square miles (1,300sq km): that’s the area of Greater Manchester and not the Isle of Wight (146sq miles/ 380sq km), as has often been claimed.
