Heroes abound in Magic Circle's production of 'Robin Hood'

GRAND RAPIDS — Anyone can be a hero in “Robin Hood and the Heroes of Sherwood Forest,” a Magic Circle children’s show opening Wednesday at Circle Theatre.

“This isn’t an ’80s Rambo kind of Robin Hood where everybody sits around waiting for him to come to the rescue,” said director/playwright Randy Wyatt. “(Robin) inspires a community of people to work together to make their lives better.”

Wyatt has written and directed several plays for Circle Theater, including last year’s “Alice in Wonderland.” He directed another adaptation of “Robin Hood” for Magic Circle in 2002, but he wanted this story to be something different. He found a canon of stories about Robin Hood, so he had plenty of tales to choose from in writing this play.

“I started working on the script last summer and found that the ideas about community trickled down into my own life,” Wyatt said. “I’ve started donating to the foodbank because of this play. It’s changed my perception about what it means to be part of a community.”

He cast the show with a broad cross-section ranging from children to college students to adults. And since his script isn’t just a one-man show, each actor has a story arc of his own.

“People step up to become heroes in their own right. All the actors get to do cool stuff,” Wyatt said.

Traditionally, the stories are told with an all-male cast, except for Maid Marian. But Wyatt has written in roles for women, including a shrewish wife and daughter for the Sheriff of Nottingham, some gypsies and one of the Merry Men, who is a woman in disguise.

“Girls come to see the show, so I want characters they can identify with,” Wyatt said. Fans also will find many of the male characters they’ve come to expect, including Little John, Friar Tuck and King Richard.
